Learning Financials in the Classroom

August 4, 2011

Now that almost every student in Rome is back to school and settling in their first week of class, it’s time to start thinking about the next few months. Our financial literacy program, learn.grow., is not only for kids at the credit union but also for the schools in the community. Learn.grow. in the classroom is a series of classroom lessons on various topics that form the foundation for a lifetime of financial success. Here’s the short version of it: a lesson taught by a trained credit union staff member will go into a teacher’s classroom and teach a financial lesson for any age group (K-12) for absolutely FREE!

Teachers and parents: here’s your chance to deepen the knowledge of your student’s financial education straight from the people who know it best. Check it out here!

Brown Bag Luncheon 2011

August 1, 2011

Adorable Centerpieces

On Friday, July 29th NWGACU hosted the annual Brown Bag Luncheon held for new educators in the Rome City and Floyd County areas. It was a successful event with Dr. Mike Buck, Chief Academic Officer for the Georgia Department of Education, as our keynote speaker and over 25 door prizes donated from local businesses! There were about 150 people in attendance including principals, administration, school board members, and of course, new teachers. Lunch was provided by the talented duo, Barbara and Ellen, the owners of Two Can Do Catering.

After Dr. Buck spoke, the new teachers as well as the attendees were filled with happy thoughts about the first day of school and an enlightened view about the future of education. The way he spoke about teachers having an effect on almost every child’s life even made me want to become a teacher for a split second. We were so fortunate to host this event this year, as last year we were not able to hold the Brown Bag Luncheon due to the low number of new hires. We hope this is a sign of what is to come of the education field for the coming years.

Northwest Georgia Credit Union announced last week that in addition to nearly 100 local employers who offer NWGACU membership to employees and family, now anyone who resides in Floyd County can join the credit union!

We have been granted a Residential Common Bond by the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance. This means that NWGACU’s membership is more readily available than ever before!

So now it’s your turn to spread the word to your friends who need to Un-bank! Here’s how to join.

We have a new scholarship winner! NWGACU’s 2011 Tom Nunn Memorial Scholarship recipient is Emma Kemnitz!

Emma receiving her award from our CEO, Michelle Stricklin.

Emma Kemnitz will graduate from Pepperell High School this May and plans to attend Colorado Christian University in the fall. Emma is the daughter of Rebecca and Glen Kemnitz. Emma involves herself in the community in programs like Toys-for-Tots, Relay for Life, and tutoring at Southeast Elementary School. The Tom Nunn Memorial Scholarship will apply toward her education at Colorado Christian University where she plans to study Psychology and Social Science.

Shopping for a car this month?

May 17, 2011

Purchasing?

Until May 31, any Northwest Georgia Credit Union member who purchases a vehicle from Enterprise Car Sales and finances it with us will get a 32″ flatscreen HDTV! With our used auto loan rates as low as 3.99% APR and Enterprise’s trustworthy used auto reputation, we’re excited to sweeten the deal for our members. You can view the current Enterprise vehicle inventory at www.cuautodeals.com.

Refinancing?

If you aren’t interested in buying a new vehicle, then what about refinancing your current auto loan with NWGACU for free? If you have a vehicle financed with another financial institution or an auto dealer, you can save big when you bring it back to NWGACU. You can refinance your auto loan with us by August 5, 2011 and get rates as low as 3.99% APR on used vehicles! And if you’re shopping for a brand new vehicle, our new auto loan rate is unbeatable too at rates as low as 3.49% APR. When refinancing your vehicle, it often lowers your monthly payment and can help you save big over the life of your loan!

When coming by the credit union to open the loan, you’ll need to bring your latest loan statement with your current balance and interest rate, or your original loan documents, your latest pay stub, and the vehicle you want to refinance.

We work hard to make refinancing an easy, quick, and free process for you.

We’re Bringing Curious George to Rome!

April 20, 2011

That’s right. On Saturday, April 30 from 10am-1pm, Curious George will be at our Redmond Road location! Our “Sock It Away” Curious George event is the culmination of our Youth Month celebration, and it will be a fun and educational (and free!) event for your own curious little monkeys at home.

Here’s what we’ve got planned:

  • Free photos with Curious George
  • The first 100 kids to open their Little Sprouts or Acorn Club account will not only get a free sock monkey, but they’ll also get $25 in their account for free! (Don’t forget to bring your child’s social security card!)
  • Games on the lawn (shhh, don’t tell your kids, but they’ll be educational games.)
  • Giveaways, fun, and food!

Don’t miss this! It’s open to the community, and it’s just our way of giving back. We’ll be there, rain or shine.

2011 Scholarships

February 1, 2011

Each year NWGACU shows it’s love for education by sponsoring two scholarships for rising college freshmen. These students must be members of the credit union and finishing up their senior year of high school.

The $1,000 Tom Nunn Memorial Scholarship goes to a deserving student who demonstrates a commitment to excellence in academics, service, and involvement in the community.

Last year the Tom Nunn recipient was Emily Williams of Rome High School.

The $1,000 Progressive Leader Scholarship is an essay-based scholarship honoring the entrepreneurial, progressive student leader who believes in their cause and makes it happen.

Our 2010 Progressive Leader recipient was Aaron Morgan of Pepperell High School.

If you or someone you know is interested in applying this year, follow the links below to print an application. You can also pick up an application with your school’s guidance counselor or here at the credit union.

Success!

August 23, 2010

I am so proud to report that the credit union held a bake sale to raise money for Team Tawny and it was a fantastic success!

We set up a table in the lobbies of both offices and filled them with treats all made by our amazing credit union staff. And wow –  the treats were delicious!

(Rebekah, Tawny, and Lori showing off their Breast Cancer fighting shirts.)

Instead of pricing each item, we asked members to donate what they thought the treats were worth. By 6:00 on Friday we wrapped up our treats and counted our donations – a whopping $342.85! And it doesn’t end there.

There were still treats left over, so Tawny was able to continue the bake sale at the Floyd Medical ER and she made another $95.00!

Thanks to everyone for your donations! The cause is great and we are thankful to be a part of this generous community.

Bake Sale to Fight Breast Cancer

August 18, 2010

Tawny is raising money to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk with her team. We’re so proud of her efforts, so we’re helping her out where we can. You can read more about her journey here

When the credit union staff gets together it’s always around food of some kind. So it only makes sense that part of our efforts to help Team Tawny would be all about food – specifically baked goods!

Our staff is going to be busy bakers this week and we’ll be selling our creations at each credit union location this Friday, August 20!

We won’t have prices labeled on each item – it’s up to you to pay what you think each item is worth. A great way to raise money for a great cause!

So, stop by either office this Friday to support Team Tawny. You won’t be able to resist the tempting treats!

Wants and Needs

July 16, 2010

When I teach financial literacy to students I am constantly going back to one lesson: Wants and Needs

According to E. Thomas Garman in Financial Stress and Workplace Performance: A colloquium at the University of Wisconsin-Madison:

“…young people in their twenties often spend 120% of their income annually. They have enormous perceived needs and wants—far greater than a generation ago—and their needs and wants are typically supported by their use of credit. “

It doesn’t matter what grade I am teaching. Kindergarteners through 12th graders need to hear it over and over. We should buy what we need first and if there is money leftover (after putting some aside in savings) then we can buy what we want.

I was reminded of this lesson yesterday when a member came in to open her very first savings account. She’s 6.

I taught her class earlier this year and she remembered the ‘wants and needs’ part of the lesson most vividly. She even wrote me a letter to thank me for teaching her this lesson - gives me warm fuzzies!

Miss Eva was so proud to be able to open her own account yesterday after she worked so hard to save her money.

After seeing Eva’s excitement to save money I am positive that she’ll remember the ‘needs first’ rule. I love that we get to see kids start off on the right foot financially – even at the age of 6!
